Happy Centennial Forsythia
Zone 3b - 1.25m / 4ft
Forsythia × ovata '‘Happy Centennial’
This plant is the result of the breeding work of Felicitas Svejda when she worked at the Canadian Department of Agriculture. She crossed the European forsythia (Forsythia spectabilis), which is not flower bud hardy in cold areas, with the Korean forsythia (Forsythia ovata), which is hardier. The cross created large plants such as ‘Northern Gold’, but also this diminutive slow growing plant. It has been a sleeper, but is now being recognized as a valuable addition to the landscape. Our 30 year old plants are only 1.5m (4ft) tall. Has a massive show of yellow blossoms in early spring. Definitely a plant that should be better known as the great signaler of spring arriving.
