Few cultivars are hardier than Yellow Transparent. Imported from Russia in the late 1800s, this apple is also known as Transparent or August apple. Its skin is grass green, becoming a translucent yellow as it ripens. The tree is small with a flowing branch pattern, and it is a biennial producer. Its hardiness was revered and the tree was found in nearly all orchards across the north. This apple is very, very early, usually ripening in August. Yellow Transparent has always been considered a prime candidate for sauce making.
