Weeping Selkirk Crabapple
Zone 2b-Corn Hill, New Brunswick, 2023
Ornamental
Parentage: probably Selkirk x Royal Beauty
A Corn Hill introduction. This tree grew as a volunteer next to one of our barns. It was actually cut back as a ‘weed’ but grew again. Luckily we procrastinated cutting it back in the years that followed which allowed it to show us its lovely habit. The tree is vigorous and grows upright with all its branches hanging pendulously, an effect much like a waterfall. The flowers are a deep red/purple and the foliage green flushed with burgundy. The fruits are quite small and deep purple. It has shown no disease and is no doubt extremely hardy. We believe this to be a chance cross of a nearby ‘Selkirk crab’ and another nearby ‘Royal Beauty’ weeping crab.
