A fascinating story behind the origin of this rose. A soldier returning home to Canada after World War 1 had brought with him a very double pink rose with a heavenly scent, with roots! The story goes that Dr. H.J. Merkeley, a dentist in Manitoba in the 1920s, had been given a piece of this rose presumably for payment of services. His father knew the breeder Frank Leith Skinner who saw the value in this ultra hardy rose and then began growing it. The name Dr. Merkeley is of course a dedication to the man who shared the cutting with him.
