Imported from England by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, this apple is believed to originate from Ukraine. In Atlantic Canada, this is still one of the most commonly found apples in the oldest orchards.
The fruit is very large, round to conic shape with yellow-orange skin that becomes striped and splashed with red. Flesh is white to light yellow and coarse textured. Although only considered fair for eating, its main use is as a cooking apple. The tree is large and upright, becoming somewhat pendulous with age. Slightly prone to apple scab and apple maggot.
