Asparagus is a long lived plant, so proper planting will assure long term success. The soil should be well drained and rich in organics for the best results. They grow best in a neutral soil (pH 7.0) Spread the crown’s roots in the bottom of a trench approximately 30cm (12in) wide and deep. Bury the roots using half the soil removed. As the shoots lengthen, gradually fill with the remainder of the soil. It is wise not to harvest any spears until the third year to allow the creation of a strong root system. Once established the spears can be harvested for 3-4 weeks.
