Parentage: Rosa rugosa hybrid
This is a pioneer rose in the Prairie provinces where most roses would perish after their first winter. For many, this rose represents the term “hardy rose.” Hansa forms immense mounds, often hollow inside due to lack of light. It sports large mauve-red flowers that bloom until late summer. Generally healthy with few or no serious insect problems. Hansa is quite heady with fragrance. This rose also produces a profusion of deep orange-red fruits that are large and meaty, excellent for tea or those who cherish the birds.
