Picea pungens

Popular conifer whose needles can range from green through blue-green. The bluest of seedlings (Picea pungens var. glauca) have been named “blue spruce”. Prices increase 15% for specimen seedlings. Prefers well drained ground with slightly acidic soil (ph 5-6). If the soil is neutral or alkaline, sulfur or iron sulfate can be added to acidify the soil. This can help produce a bluer cast to the needles, but the genetics of the seedling cannot be changed, so a green or blue-green specimen will remain that colour. Choose select blues for best colour.
