Clematis hybrids - photos coming soon

We have chosen only those clematis we feel are hardy in Zone 4 and for protected sites in Zone 3b. Clematis need a moist, well drained soil that is rich in nutrients. They grow best in a soil with a pH of 6.5-7.0, so liming acidic soils is important. Perhaps the biggest killer of clematis is planting them under the eaves of a house. This zone is very dry. If you want to plant them against the house it is best to place them beyond the drip zone and train on slender rods such as bamboo to a trellis or similar support structure on the wall. They will climb using tendrils, so a structure with narrow uprights is best. In spring, starting at the top, cut back the vines until you see green in the stem. The old wood that is left will bloom as well as the new wood. Clematis are also effective climbing through the stems of shrubs, their native habitat. Be gentle working with clematis vines when they are growing. Broken stems are an invitation to clematis wilt, which will work its way through the vine quickly. When planting, place the vine deeper than the junction between root and top. The buried section of vine will root and even if wilt hits the vine it will not proceed below the soil line.
