Dessert, cooking (sauce)
Early season
Parentage: o.p. seedling of Mcintosh
Paula Red is an early apple, ripening in late August or early September in most areas. Not usually thought of as a keeping apple, it can be stored for around 2 months in cold storage. It has a nice balance between tart and sweet, with maybe a touch heavier in the tart department. Paula Red makes a fantastic eating apple and is often touted as an excellent choice for apple sauce. Some refer to it as Early McIntosh. It is undoubtedly a seedling of the same. Its skin is lime green, turning red where facing the sun and often covered with a light bloom. Paula Red is subject to apple scab.
