Sandow Apple
Zone 4 - Ottawa, Ontario. 1935 - Dwarf rootstock
Dessert, cooking
Late season
Parentage: Open pollinated seedling of Northern Spy
Sandow has a green background with striping and blushes of red over most of the surface. The flesh is coarse textured, tart and sweet. This tree is an upright grower, making it a bit difficult to prune but early intervention can help with limb spreading, and has proven hardy in zone 4 and we believe worth trying in the warmer sections of zone 3. Sandow is superb as both an eating and a culinary apple. Scab resistant, somewhat resistant to codling moth, but is susceptible to apple maggot fly. A vastly underrated and valuable apple.
